From the Superintendent

At age 15, I volunteered at a summer day camp for people with disabilities. I fell in love with the field and knew this was what I wanted to do with my life. In the following years, I volunteered with various groups that served children with DD and was eventually hired to work with adults in group homes.

Those experiences gave me the desire to go back to school for an advanced degree so I could impact how people were treated. I worked to bring people home from the institutions, back into their communities. What an impact it had on their lives! Throughout the years, I continued to see the supports for people with DD improve and better reflect the lives people wanted.
Later in my career, I worked for the Ohio Department of DD on developing the Level 1 waiver. This program opened opportunities for people to move into their community; jobs outside of workshops became a reality; voting, marriage and transportation options became accessible to many more people with DD.

Coming back to Hamilton County gave me the ability to know what was needed for people in their own communities and take action to meet that need.

As I look back on my career, I feel honored that I was a part of this progression of services. I look forward to seeing how the next generation will build on that progress to create more opportunities for people with disabilities. I’m thankful for every person and family I’ve worked with over the years. And I’m especially thankful for the wonderful staff at HCDDS and the dedication I witnessed every day throughout my career here. I wish you all the best of luck in the future.
