In 1987, President Ronald Reagan declared March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. This year we celebrate 35 years of DD Awareness Month. Every March, people with disabilities express ourselves, show we can take care of ourselves with assistance, and know someone will be there for us in any way we need it.
DD Awareness Month is important because it shows a person with a disability can work or be part of their community, if they choose. I look forward to going back to Columbus for the annual Awareness Day celebration, but you can celebrate DD Awareness anywhere.
