PigAbilities Meetups Begin Feb. 25

On Sunday, Feb. 25, the Flying Pig mascot will be cheering on a training group of athletes with disabilities and their supporters at LeBlond Rec Center. This is the second year for the PigAbilities Meetups, a weekly group that helps people get ready to complete the one-mile event during Flying Pig weekend.

Hamilton County Developmental Disabilities Services (HCDDS) hosts the weekly meetups with its partners at Queen City Running Club. “Our Meetups are an opportunity for people to get outside and get active,” said Ann Myres, HCDDS Community Navigator and leader of the PigAbilities Meetups. “It’s also a chance to connect and meet new people who are working toward the same goal.”

Cathy Melvin attended the weekly meetups in 2023. “I thought it would be good exercise,” she said. “I had fun meeting new people.”

Even if you don’t think you can walk the full mile, Myres encourages people to come out, start with shorter distances, and then build up to the full mile.

“There are plenty of people to support you along the way,” she said. “Sometimes when you are walking and talking with other people, you can surprise yourself with how far you can go.”

Meetups are 2-3 p.m. Sundays and will cover distances ranging from 0.25 miles to 1 mile, along accessible routes. Each Meetup offers a chance to socialize and connect with others while getting ready for PigAbilities, a one-mile event for participants and their supporters to run, walk or roll at their own pace and cross the official Flying Pig Marathon Finish Swine!
